SOSA was revived very recently, in the fall of 2007. As of now, we are still deciding which way we want to go, and making plans for future endeavors, one of which is a show later on this year.
We as a society, and as a community are formed to elevate the academic experience of artists within the University of Alberta. We are establishing an entity within the greater artistic community, in order to expose and hopefully to integrate students within it. Our focus will be on getting work and opportunity to show artwork for our students. However, a lesser, but no less important focus will be put on increasing the quality of the learning experience at the university.
Many students who come into the Bachelor of Fine Arts program do it because they love art. More often than not they have little idea of what they are going to do with their degree. Under the umbrella of the society people and companies can commission our members. Established and full time artists will be brought in to talk to the students on their life, successes, and failures. On top of getting work, students will be able to, and encouraged, to show and exhibit their own work in formal, society run spaces and to push to find non-gallery reliant exhibiting outlets.
To accommodate the lifestyle of the 'student artist' no dues will be collected from its members. All that will be required is the effort to develop and promote SOSA.
Bring an interest in art and a willingness to go out and meet a few people - SOSA doesn't require an annual fee to join, nor do you have to be actually taking an art / design course. Art is a very broad area - plenty of room for lots of fun! You can email us, or just come along to a meeting.
Weekly meetings will be held on mondays, at 5 in FAB 1-10 (the sculpture studio) to keep members up to date on the goings on within the society.
We do have a facebook group. This might help you to keep track of where and when meetings are, as more important events are sometimes announced through there. It's an easy way to do it, as most people do use facebook.
